Walks and tours in the Algarve

Hiking and cycling in São Lourenço, Victoria Boulevard and Quinta do Lago

Nature trails and walks

If you have not hired a car, get your walking shoes on and discover one of the most beautiful and natural parts of the Algarve – the Ria Formosa Nature Park. Here you will see a variety of migrating and nesting birds in their natural habitat, some of which are endangered species. There are also many interesting walks available for the more energetic, which takes you through spectacular scenery and gives an insight into the flora and fauna of the Algarve.

Scenic walks in the Quinta do Lago area

São Lourenço Trail: This trail has been made especially to call visitor’s attention to two different types of wetland: salt marshes and freshwater lakes, as well as to salting tanks dating from the Roman period. The São Lourenço trail is about 3.2 kms (2 miles) long and has several stations, or stops, with posts painted with a blue stripe. Some locations also have illustrated information boards in English and Portuguese.

Quinta do Lago Trail: The Quinta do Lago trail was established for visitors who may be more interested in the plant life of two distinct ecosystems: woods and salt marshland. This trail is about 2.3 km (1.4 miles) long and has two stopping points where there are illustrated boards in Portuguese and English. The route is marked by post painted with an orange stripe.

Scenic car tours and walks in the Algarve

The Cork Oak Route: The placid waters of the Gilão river at Tavira can be traced back to the rural Barrocal limestone belt and sparcely inhabited hills barely touched by tourism.

The Guadiana Route: Walk among the ruins of one of the Algarve´s most important medieval castles, visit the backwater town of Alcoutim and drive homeward along the banks of the Guadiana river.

The Salir Circuit: Distance 11Km, Grade easy-moderate, the walk uses mainly good tracks and paths, there is very little climbing involved. You should leave your car on the south side of Salir, in the wide road coming from Loulé, just before coming to the first junction in Salir. Even within the confines of the large valley around Salir, there is an unexpected variety in the landscape that can only be appreciated if you are on foot. This walk follows some narrow footpaths, bounded by groves, and broad tracks through wilder regions. It crosses rivers on stepping stones and visits intimate farming communities.

The Paderne Castle: Distance 14km, Grade easy-moderate, Paderne castle dates back to the time of the Moors. Built on a hill and surrounded on three sides by the River Quarteira. The walk takes you along the castle´s country side and to the castle itself.

The Estoi Circuit: Distance 15,2km, Grade moderate. Estoi has two special points of interest, the ruins of a roman villa (Milreu) near the start of the walk and the Palacio do Visconde de Estoi at the end. During the walk there are some fantastic panoramic views and spots for a picnic.

Note: Nature trail books are available for sale at any Post Office at a cost of approximately €7,60 each.
